History of Jessamine Cottage
Jessamine cottage is around 250 years old, built of stone up to the first floor and then ‘cob’ above that. Cob is a mixture of sand, soil, gravel, horse hair and any other material that could be mixed with water and shaped on top of the stone wall. The Delabole hanging slate at the front protects the cob from the weather.
The flat roof extension was built in the eighties and has provided us with a fantastic view towards Port Isaac and the sea.
At some time in the past the lady who owned the cottage also owned the property situated next door but one towards Port Isaac. As a result our drains cross next doors patio and run into a cess pit in the garden of China Meadow!
The school house immediately behind the cottage was the original chapel. Somewhere before 1907 and after 1881 a new and bigger Methodist chapel was built across the road from our cottage. It has now been converted to a private residence.
